So, what does this mean? Well, it appears that Nereid is an original moon of Neptune, and its strange orbit is a result of the chaos caused by Triton's capture. Interestingly, in some simulations, Triton kicked an inner moon into a stable, elongated orbit, similar to Nereid's.
